  • Priceline - This helpful free service lets you "name your own price for leisure air travel." You name the price you want to pay and Priceline finds a major airline willing to release seats on flights where they have unsold space. Tickets can be requested up to six months in advance.
  • MessageX - This innovative new free service lets you turn your pager, or your PCS phone, into a wireless messaging center. Thus, anyone with Net access can reach you, 24 hours a day, no matter where you are. With MessageX, anyone can send you a message, using your regular E-mail address.
  • NetZero - NetZero offers you free Net access in exchange for displaying ad space in your browser. They support 56K FLEX and V90 modem standards. They provide local access numbers to most major and many medium-sized cities in the U.S. In order to participate, you must download their proprietary "zCast" software program, which requires at least a 486 system with 16 megs of RAM and 12 megs of hard drive space. U.S. only. (For Windows 98/95). A Mac version is promised eventually.
  • ZineZone - There are thousands of zines on the Web on every conceivable topic. But at this fascinating, cutting-edge site, you can create your own personal zine, for free. Here, you build "filters" that automatically scout the Web daily, according to your specific interests. From this process, a custom zine is created for you.
  • freetutorials.com - A very complete resource for learning how to do most anything with your computer. Anil Ramnanan's site offer free tutorial resources in a broad range of categories: programming, graphics, the Net, operating systems, Web design and more.
  • Clock radio offer - Normally, we don't list offers that cost anything. But this is a great deal: for only $1, you get a free portable clock radio, plus a 3-month membership to Netmarket, a Web retailer. There's no obligation to continue your membership after the trial period. (U.S. only).
  • Transloader - This free file transfer service is perfect for WebTV users who don't have a way to transfer content. It's also useful for the users of various free Web space providers (GeoCities, Angelfire, Tripod, etc.) who need a way to upload files. Also, those who haven't figured out how to use an FTP program will find Transloader helpful.
  • LBE Helpdesk - If you run a Web business, you'll find this free multi-user "helpdesk system" handy for a variety of uses, from customer service to order tracking to enquiry processing. It's compliant with MAPI mail.
  • Schedule Online - This recently launched site offers a free online calendar and scheduling service, aimed at small to mid-sized businesses and non-profit organizations. Here, you can schedule meetings and individual tasks, reserve resources, as well as create personal to do lists and notes, all in a secure environment. It's perfect for organizations that don't have the resources to create their own Intranet or to purchase and administer full-blown, client-server, groupware applications, such as Microsoft Exchange with Outlook.
  • Free long-distance calls - BroadPoint Communications is offering free long-distance phone calls. OK, there is a catch. You must listen to commercial messages first. For each commercial you listen to, you'll earn two free minutes of talk time.
  • RHL School's Free Worksheets - This site offers hundreds of free worksheets for teachers and parents to copy and distribute to their students. Subjects include reading comprehension, math problem solving, English basics and reference skills. The materials are aimed at students in the elementary through middle school levels.
  • Catch-UP - Wondering if you have the latest drivers and the newest versions of software on your Windows system? Manageable Software's Catch-UP is a free, ad-supported service that automates the process of finding the latest patches and updates for your software. Run Catch-UP via your browser and it'll generate a customized list of updates and upgrades for your software (and include the corresponding download sites). A helpful service.
  • FreeDrive - Here's a unique, pioneering free service that gives you your own personal Web hard drive, available anywhere. With FreeDrive, you can easily upload & download any files you choose from anywhere. File uploads can be done with almost all Netscape browsers and Internet Explorer 4.0. (If your copy of IE is before version 4.0, you'll need to upgrade to use FreeDrive.) FreeDrive recently increased the amount of space it offers to 20 megabytes. They've also upgraded their servers and service is much speedier than before.
  • Secret Admirer - Here's an interesting free service that can help you find romance on the Net. By sending an anonymous message at this site, you can find out whether someone you like feels the same way about you. Your anonymous message invites your secret love to the site to send a message of their own. If all goes well, the person who they send a message in response to will be you.
  • Themez - A comprehensive resource for desktop "themes" (which you can use to give your Windows desktop a customized look). This site has over 3,700 free themes. Categories include animals, anime, art, cartoons, computers, games, holidays, horror, movies, music, nature, people, places, sci-fi, sports, TV, vehicles and more.
  • FreeRealTime.com - Tired of stale, delayed stock quotes? This free, advertising-supported service gives you real-time quotes that you can retrieve as fast as your connection will allow. All you need to do is register (which is free, too) and abide by the rules. This popular service can be difficult to access during times of peak stock trading. The service may encounter some problems behind firewalls (read their FAQ for solutions). (Information available on U.S. markets only.) Options quotes not available now, but are promised soon.

  • CarPrices.com - A respected major site that offers a number of helpful free services for car owners and buyers. Here, you'll find free auto insurance quotes, free finance quotes, free brochures, free instant new & used car price quotes and more.
  • Easy Diary - Web calendars are emerging as a hot new trend on the Web. One of the best we've seen is Easy Diary. This free service offers a helpful, Web-based interactive calendar that lets you conveniently make and confirm appointments, send and receive reminders, create a "to-do" list and more.
  • Central Scanning Zone - Need a scan of an image? This site offers one free photo scan per visitor. Your scan will be E-mailed to you in either JPG or BMP format.
  • Barbara's Outlook Express Stationary Page - Liven up your Microsoft Outlook Express correspondence with the many neat, free stationary sets that Barbara offers. There's all kinds of great designs here (some with MIDI sound files included) for all occasions.
  • Family Point - This cool free service lets you set up a "meeting place" for your family in cyberspace. Just sign up and set up your own space on Family Point and then you can take advantage of features like a calendar for keeping everyone up to date. There's also a place to post your photos, an address book, chat, discussion groups and E-mail.
  • Tritium: free Net access - (Service has been temporarily suspended). This new ad-supported service offers free Net access. You use their free software to access the Net. There's no start-up fee, no setup fee and no monthly access fees. The only catch: part of your display (12 percent, to be exact) is taken up by ad space. Note: in order to participate, you must fill out their surveys twice a month. U.S. only; Tritium offers local access numbers in 25 areas.
  • The itList - The Web's first online bookmark manager. Are you tired of having one set of bookmarks at the office and another at home? Or maybe you're at a friend's house and want to show him or her a killer site you saw, but you can't remember the site's address. itList puts your bookmarks where you can always access them.
  • Lost & Found - Here's a free, non-profit public service that aims to match owners with their missing property. Lost & Found is community/ZIP code based service, sponsored by the Association of Lost & Found Officials.
  • HipBONE: Surf with a friend - HipBONE is an interesting, free service that allows two or more people to connect their browsers and surf the Web together. Using HipBONE, you and your colleagues can do surfing, shopping and searching online together. You can also collaborate or watch each other fill out Web-based forms together. Among other uses, it's handy as a teaching tool.
  • Free Net access - (U.K. only) Residents of Britain can now get full free Internet access through Freeserve. (You will need to pick up a free CD-ROM with the software to get you started at any PC World, Dixons, Currys or The Link outlets.) Besides Net access, Freeserve offers free unlimited E-mail addresses and five megabytes of free Web space.

  • Involv: free Web teaming - Here's an interesting new free service that lets you instantly create a dedicated interactive site on the Web for your team or group. Your site here is like a virtual room on the Web that grants access to only those you include. Once logged in, your invited participants can: customize a personal page, use a discussion board, post files for others to download, create memos and vote on issues. There's also a customizable team or group home page that greets each user when they enter.
  • Epage Classifieds - There are many free classified ads sites on the Web but this is one of the few worth bookmarking. All private party ads are free here and they're cross-posted to the newsgroups, as well. All ads may have one picture uploaded. There's also an account management page where you can see info on your ads, bids you have made (on auctions), etc.

WinTune 98 lets you test your PC's performance by simply clicking through a series of Web pages. Once you have completed the tests, you can compare your results to those of similar systems in the site's database.

  • Southern Exposure Vacation Rentals - Vacation season is coming up and this site offers a helpful free service. Southern Exposure lists vacation rental listings for free. Just fill out the form with all of your details (location, rates, etc.) and they'll list it, along with photos of your property.
  • AdOne Classified Ad Searcher - Tell "Ad Hound" what you're looking for and this free service will search for your request in the classified ads of over 400 newspapers, across the U.S. Results are then mailed to you.
  • Free Fax service. - Not sure how much longer this service will be around---it allows you to send a free fax within a certain covered area. You may either send a fax through your Web browser or through your E-mail client.
